Memories Of Tea
My grandmother Theresa (other wise known as Tea) has several quirks. One of her quirks is that she obsessively photographs her life. For example if it’s a family dinner such as thanksgiving she has to take a photo of every single person present at the dinner and a photo of every single persons tray of food. She has taken these photographs since the 1960’s. As a result of this I have my entire life documented as well as my fathers, my grandfathers, all my cousins, and even relatives that I have no idea existed. My family use to religiously gather for Sunday dinner and made sure to visit each other every few days. But as I have gotten older my family has grown farther and farther apart and now we only see each other at typical structured family functions.
My project Memories from Tea focuses on using the images that Theresa has taken to reconstruct the childhood memories that are common to children in the south and beyond. It’s an exploration into shared feelings and spaces that express parallel multi-generational experiences and memories. All of the images below are scanned silver-gelatin prints. Excerpts from this body of work were shown in the 2018 Hendrix Student Art Exhibition.
